10 ways to detox without a juice cleanse

September 07, 2015 0 Comments

Spring is a great time to "cleanse" your body. Although juice cleanses are a great way to do it, they're not always for everyone. There are many other amazing ways to help your body transition with the changing season, and have a break from things that may not necessarily be serving you well. Now before we leap into our list what on earth is cleansing anyway?

Fundamentally speaking the sole purpose of cleansing is to:

  • Remove toxins from your body
  • Support your detoxification organs - think kidneys, blood and our old pal liver.
  • Help your body get in tune with the season, and transition to eating what we are designed to eat,  which is lots of organic fruits and veggies and other amazing wholefood goodness.

What are toxins?

Put quite simply, toxins are chemicals or poisons that are known to have a harmful effect on the body. These can come from food, water, pesticides, fertilisers, cleaning products, pollution, smoking, alcohol, make up etc. A build up of these chemicals can lead to illness and disease.

So why should you cleanse?

  • Cleaning is a great opportunity to reassess where you are in your life, your goals, dreams, hopes and how you feel about your body.
  • Cleansing allows your body to heal and repair more effectively
  • Cleansing is a great ways to ditch any addictions to coffee, alcohol, medications, recreational drugs and sugar
  • If you're trying to conceive, doing a cleanse may have a significant effect on your chances of falling pregnant, and if done with a health practitioner, can identify any underlying issues that may be preventing you from falling pregnant.
  • A cleanse done with a naturopath, can also help unearth and get rid of any parasites that may be lurking in your body, candida and overgrowth of other nasties you may not be aware of.
So how do you help your body clean up?
  1. Cut the crap - this means ditching anything processed like takeaway food, baked goods, caffeine, alcohol, sugar, refined salt, anything with vegetable oils, soy, gluten, additives, packaged juices, bread, supplements and over the counter medications.
  2. Choose fresh - Instead opt for whole fresh foods that are organic where possible.
  3. Learn - Get creative in the kitchen, and learn how to source and prepare your own nutritious meals.
  4. Get moving - When in doubt, sweat it out. Move your body, and allow it to detox naturally. Sweating and moving your body is a great way to get everything to make it's way for the exit.
  5. Clean up your environment - Have a look at all the chemicals you may have in your life like your cleaning products, makeup, skin care, polution. Try removing the chemicals in your environment and opt for natural alternatives. Cleansing is a great time to clean up your surrounding environment, your wardrobe, handbag, anywhere else you may have accumulate clutter.
  6. Eat more detoxifying foods like garlic, citrus fruits, greens, green tea.
  7. Drink more water - it's no brainer, this stuff helps you flush it all out.
  8. Do yoga - doing yoga will help you cleanse your body, and your mind.
  9. Dry brush - your skin is your biggest organ, dry brushing is a great way to help your body get rid of toxins by improving your circulation and removing any dead skin cells.
  10. Get some sleep - Take the hard work out of cleansing, and do it in your sleep. Seriously. While you're sleeping, your body is busy releasing hormones that assist in healthy cell growth, fighting off infections, and tissue repair. The catch is it all happens slowly, so make sure you give yourself enough shut eye.
