Can drinking alcohol help you lose weight?

If you've indulged in a few celebratory alcoholic beverages this weekend, this may help ease your mind. A 2010 study found that compared with nondrinkers, normal-weight women who consumed a light to moderate amount of alcohol gained less weight and had a lower risk of becoming overweight and/or obese during an almost 13 year of follow-up.

Before you rush off to Queen’s Birthday happy hour there are a few things you ought to know:

  • Consuming alcohol puts it to the front of the metabolic line, meaning that everything else you consume is put on hold.
  • Alcohol  stimulates your appetite, so chances are you will most likely eat more when drinking.
  • Not all alcohol is created equal. Most alcohol drinks are loaded with sugar.
  • Wine contains minimal fructose, because it's the fructose that is fermented to become alcohol, leaving wine low in sugar.
  • Red wine is lower in fructose than white wine and is definitely the better option.
  • Alcohol is actually considered a poison by your body, sending into detox overdrive.
So how does one lose weight and drink? If you’re going to drink,
  • Opt for red wine over cocktails, champagne/sparkling, dessert wine or beer.
  • If you’re not a wine drinker opt for spirits with soda water or “neat". Mixers are always full of sugar.
  • Watch what you eat before and during alcohol consumption. If you're going to drink, best to pass on the dessert.
  • An occasional glass may help your waistline, but too much can lead to a fatty liver, nutrient deficiencies, weight loss resistance, inflammation, and a host of other problems.
Enjoyed responsibly, a glass or two of dry wine can reasonably fit into a healthy lifestyle of a low-sugar diet, optimum hydration, exercise, and plenty of sleep.
