5 tips for a healthier easter

March 30, 2015 0 Comments

There's no need to give up chocolate or hot-cross buns to stay healthy over Easter.

With the Easter break just days away, many of us will be celebrating the joy of time spent with family, friends, tons of chocolate and fluffy little parcels of fruit speckled goodness known as hot cross buns.

The aftermath is usually a sugar coma, a bloated belly, and a couple of zits to keep the memories alive for a week or so after. It is possible to enjoy the tasty traditions of Easter and still feel good about yourself the next day. The Well Nest Kitchen has made a few healthy alternatives for our Brisbane friends to enjoy. But if our treats are out of reach, our resident Naturopath in the making,  Isabella Walton share her top five ways to make this Easter a little healthier.

Continue To Make Healthy Eating Habits A Priority

At the end of the day, it is just another day! It is a holiday, and there’s something magnificent to be celebrated, but the price tag of an enjoyable holiday is not your health. Your body is a temple, and worth much more than a ‘just because I can’ weekend. All the great habits you have down pat and employ in everyday life don’t have to go out the window – in fact, they shouldn’t! Stick with them! Instead of replacing the whole kit-and-kabudle with unhealthy foods, keep your current routine, and add in a few treats to savor and enjoy. The best thing about all this, is that not only will you feel great across the weekend AND after, but ‘getting back on the band wagon’ will be easy and seamless, because, well, you never got off!

  • Eat adequate protein and healthy fats to keep you satiated and satisfied - adios sugar cravings!
  • Add greens to every meal - green veggies are great for alkalizing and detoxing the body
  • Try a veggie juice once a day - delicious, easy-to-digest and a fantastic source of anti-inflammatory, energizing nutrients!

Don’t Overthink It!

One of the most harmful things for our body is stress! We all know this. But how easy is it to get caught up in trying to live so perfectly, so 100% completely ‘healthy’ that we let it consume every part of our being. Can I suggest, that the inner battle you are having with yourself about ‘saying no to Grandma’s famous rhubarb pie’ is MORE harmful to your body, then indulging in a small slice and cherishing the moment with your loved ones. It is OK to enjoy beautiful food, and it is OK to indulge in a sweet treat. Savor it, and appreciate the moment. If you spend the whole weekend being anxious and thinking about resisting the chocolate that you know is coming on Sunday, you might miss out on the goodness going on around you, then binge later anyway. Let go of the guilt and relax this long weekend. Don’t overthink it, stick to what you know is nourishing for your body, and know that it is OK to enjoy a sweet treat. If you can, create a healthy version of your favorite indulgent food to enjoy.

Make Like A Bunny And Bounce!

Yes, exercising is one of the best ways to stay healthy and enjoy the long weekend. It will clear your mind, relax your entire body, aid digestion, and release all those happy hormones (endorphins). This could be as simple as a walk around the block with the family, or an afternoon of tag in the park with the kids. Whatever it is, you will feel better for it – guaranteed!

Stay Hydrated

Everyone KNOWS this, but don’t underestimate this simple practice and hear me out! Water is essential to keeping everything in the body in working order, helping you clear toxins and balancing all of your systems out. This is important especially when you’ve been drinking alcohol and nibbling on sweet treats. Approximately 2L of water per day is optimal.

Remember The Reason For The Season, (hint - It's not food)

Many of us are looking forward to the long weekend for various reasons. Whatever it is, remember that food is not the sole focus. The Easter weekend is a great time to get together with friends and family and celebrate the abundance and blessing of life, enjoying the present time.  So above all else, immerse yourself in love this weekend. Share it, be it and give it! Food is not nearly as satisfying as the joy of human connection.
